Discussion “Enforcing the human right to a healthy environment”
Should the human right to a healthy environment be included in national and international human rights catalogs?
Environmental protection falls within the scope of human rights protection through other human rights: the right to life, the right to a fair trial, the right to respect for private and family life, etc. How relevant is the right to a healthy environment in the case of Russian aggression against Ukraine? Is the recognition of the right to a healthy environment too much interference in the internal politics of states? Or is the right to a healthy environment too abstract to be recognized by the United Nations? What alternative legal remedies allow individuals to protect the environment?
On 24th of March 2022 during the discussion, the possibilities of consolidating the right to a healthy environment and the consequences for the protection of human rights were discussed together with the former United Nations Special Rapporteur Henry C. Lauerman, Professor of International Law John Knox (Wake Forest University School of Law). The discussion was moderated by Dr. Donatas Murauskas (Faculty of Law, Vilnius University).
The discussion took place on the YouTube platform.
