Meeting – Where did the law of the sea come from?
The seas and oceans of the world have always been and remain the space of states’ power, interests, expectations, attractive opportunities and terrifying threats. Thousands of remains of ships, settlements and other objects in the depths of the sea are fragments of world history, testifying to the legal order as well. The legal regime of sea spaces established in 1982. It is regulated in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international treaties, formed on the basis of state practice and agreements, the doctrine of legal science, resolutions of international organizations, and court jurisprudence. However, various events in the seas and oceans of the world force us to re-apply and interpret already established legal norms and principles, and sometimes to change them.
Lithuanian Maritime Academy on 18th of March, 2021 invited to a virtual meeting with Vilnius University Faculty of Law researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Indre Isokaite-Valužė and discover the answers to the question “where did maritime law come from?”.
