Conference “Crime prevention in Lithuania: is the determination enough for real reforms?”
Such a question was raised on 11th of June, 2021 at the held remote conference, which aimed to draw attention to the state of crime prevention in Lithuania and outline possible reform guidelines to change the situation.
Crime prevention in all European countries, including Lithuania, is recognized as one of the most important areas of state policy and ensuring public welfare. However, too little attention is paid to this in Lithuania. 11th of June conference organizers will correct this mistake by paying attention to discussing this issue together with scientists, practitioners and policy makers in one place. The conference organizers took the initiative to look at the state of crime prevention in Lithuania because the Government’s plan of measures is expected to make decisions on the organization of crime prevention and other violations of law in Lithuania this year.
The government’s program notes that the aim will be to more effectively ensure public safety and public expectations, paying great attention and priority to the prevention of criminal acts and other violations of the law, closer cooperation between law enforcement institutions and the public in carrying out various mutual activities aimed at preventing violations of the law, eliminating conditions that create favorable opportunities for them to occur, and not exclusively to react and investigate violations of the law that have occurred.
These set tasks create an excellent opportunity, with the help of representatives of the Lithuanian academic community, practicing lawyers and representatives of the Seimas, ministries, to examine the system of prevention of crimes and violations of law in Lithuania in more detail, to provide possible reform guidelines that could give tangible results.
The conference was organized by the Law and Order Committee of the Seimas, Vilnius University Faculty of Law, Mykolas Romeris University School of Law, the Lithuanian Lawyers’ Society and the Lithuanian Bar Association.
