Conference “Application of EU Charter as a Standard of Individual Rights’ Defense at Supra- and National Levels”

On 4 November 2016, Vilnius University Faculty of Law organized a scientific conference “Application of EU Charter as a Standard of Individual Rights’ Defense at Supra- and National Levels” which took place at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania. The conference was the final event of the project funded by the Research Council of Lithuania and was dedicated to commemorate the 375th anniversary of Faculty of Law. The project was lead by VU Assoc. Prof. Dr. Skirgailė Žalimienė.

The conference was attended by scholars from Vilnius University and other universities, judges, representatives from the Bar Association and other related institutions. The conference papers were presented by judges from EU and Lithuanian courts, including, the European Court of Justice judge Prof. dr. Egidijus Jarašiūnas, the Supreme Court of Lithuania Chairman Prof. dr. Rimvydas Norkus, the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania Deputy Chairman Assoc. Prof. dr. Irmantas Jarukaitis (Vilnius University Associate Professor), the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania judge dr. Skirgailė Žalimienė (Vilnius University Associate Professor), the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania judge Assoc. Prof. dr. Danutė Jočienė. During the event, Vilnius University Faculty of Law researchers – Prof. dr. Tomas Davulis, Assoc. Prof. dr. Jurgita Paužaitė-Kulvinskienė, lecturers Dr. Ingrida Danelienė and Dr. Erika Leonaitė shared their insights.

The conference was aimed at discussing relevant issues on the application of the EU Charter as a standard of individual rights’ defense: Charter interpretation problems in the ECJ jurisprudence, the defense of individual rights enshrined in the Charter at the national level, human rights challenges, problematic aspects of the application of the Charter in legal labour relations, problematic aspects of the right to the protection of personal data, etc.
