International conference “Challenges of Economic Crisis to Human Rights”
On 10th – 11th October 2014, the international scientific conference “Challenges of Economic Crisis to the Human Rights“ was held at the Presidential of the Republic of Lithuania. The conference was dedicated to addressing the problems of the economic crisis in the legal system, to evaluate the legislation and application of the law in the light of the legal standards of a democratic society.
Dr. Rasa Svetikaitė, the Chief Adviser of the President, conveyed a word of greeting from the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė. The participants also were welcomed by Prof. Habil. Dr. Jūras Banys, the rector of Vilnius University, and by Prof. Dr. Tomas Davulis, the dean of the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University. An introductory presentation was made by Prof. Dr. (HP) Egidijus Kūris, the judge of the European Court of Human Rights. He was the head of the scientific project “Challenges of Economic Crisis (recession) to the Rule of Law and Human Rights”. The presentations of the impact of the economic crisis on labour and social rights were presented by Prof. Dr. William K. Roche (Ireland), Prof. Dr. Michele Tiraboschi (Italy), by scientists of the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daiva Petrylaitė and Dr. Vida Petrylaitė. Tax law issues in the context of the economic crisis were addressed in presentations of Prof. Dr. Felipe Gomez (Spain) and scientists from Faculty of Law of Vilnius University – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aistė Medelienė, Dr. Mindaugas Lukas. Responsible management theme was discussed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Giedrė Lastauskienė and Prof. Dr. Arvydas Andruškevičius.
The second day of the conference was dedicated to the impact of the economic crisis on civil and political human rights and the independence of the judiciary. Presentations were given by Prof. Dr. Antoine Buyse (The Netherlands), Dr. Noelle Higgins (Ireland), and by scientists of Faculty of Law of Vilnius University – Prof. Dr. Dainius Žalimas, Dr. Elena Masnevaitė, Dr. Vygantė Milašiūtė and Dr. Indrė Isokaitė.
This conference was the final event of the scientific project “Challenges of the Economic Crisis (Recession) to the Rule of Law and Human Rights“. The scientific research was implemented by scholars of the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University. This research was funded by the European Social Fund under the Global Grant measure (No VPI-3.1-ŠMM-07-K-03-085).
