The conference “Lawyers in Politics: The Obligation to the Country, Professional Development or Other?”
On 10 May 2013, the Lithuanian Lawyers’ Association (LLA) organised the annual conference “Lawyers in Politics: The Obligation to the Country, Professional Development or Other?” The event was traditionally held before the annual general meeting in the Science Information and Communication Centre of Vilnius University.
In the event, the members of the Lawyers’ Association discussed the benefits and challenges that the lawyers engaged in the politics are dealing with. Members of Seimas, Remigijus Šimašius, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, Dr. Stasys Šedbaras, Deputy Minister of Justice Paulius Griciūnas, journalists-political analysts Virginijus Savukynas and Dr. Algimantas Šindeikis participated in the discussions of the round table.
“Every year before the general meeting of the members of the Association, we choose a relevant legal topic for the conference. This year, the lawyers-politicians and those who observe the process from aside participated in the debates on lawyers in politics,” the head of the Lithuanian Lawyers’ Association and the Dean of Vilnius University Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Tomas Davulis said.
In the meeting held after the conference, the annual reports were heard and a new head of LLA was elected. Moreover, the P. Leonas scholarship and the name of honorary LLA member were granted.
The Lithuanian Lawyers Association was established in 1920. It unites more than 800 lawyers of all professions throughout Lithuania. The goals of LLA are: to contribute to forming the sovereign rule of the state of Lithuania; to participate in strengthening the basis of democratic management and developing the corresponding legislation; to contribute to forming human rights and freedoms, and public legal consciousness; to strengthen the relation between the science and practice; ensure the implementation of the scientific advice into legislative and legal practice.
