Delegation from “Kyiv Mohyla Academy” visited Vilnius University: agreement reached on a double degree diploma of the Law Faculty programme

Rector of the Vilnius University (VU) Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas and representatives of the Law Faculty on January 24th met with Serhiy Kvit, President of the National University of Ukraine “Kyiv Mohyla Academy” (NaUKMA) and the delegation led by him. During the meeting, the most important issues of cooperation between the two universities were discussed, including the double-diploma of Master’s degree programme.

This meeting with delegation of NaUKMA was also attended by Dr Artūras Vasiliauskas, Pro-Rector for Partnerships at VU, and Assoc. Prof. Dr Vigita Vėbraitė, Vice-Dean for studies at the VU Law Faculty.

VU has been fostering a partnership with “Kyiv Mohyla Academy”, the National University of Ukraine, for some time. In 2022, NaUKMA joined Arqus, the European Alliance of Universities, of which VU is a member as well. In addition, VU has signed a cooperation agreement enabling citizens from both countries to obtain a double Master’s degree in Law.

“Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, we have been supporting Ukrainian society and universities with symbolic gestures and real actions. The joint support of state and Vilnius University has enabled the University to enrol the largest number of Ukrainian students in the higher education sector. We have appealed to academic and non-academic organisations to urgently isolate Russia politically and economically. We called on the Lithuanian and European Union institutions to develop programmes to support Ukrainian universities as soon as possible. On our initiative, the European University Alliance Arqus welcomed “Kyiv Mohyla Academy” as an associate partner. This meeting is another concrete step in strengthening our cooperation with “Kyiv Mohyla Academy,” says Prof. R. Petrauskas, Rector of the Vilnius University.

The study programme will be developed in cooperation between VU and NaUKMA universities and will be included in the curriculum of both universities. It is foreseen that the subjects of the study programme will be taught in English and Ukrainian to NaUKMA students, while VU students will have the opportunity to study in English.

“The cooperation between Vilnius University Faculty of Law and “Kyiv Mohyla Academy” is important for us in developing a sustainable long-term relationship in both fields of studies and research. We hope that the agreement reached on the double degree programme will contribute to increased mobility of both students and lecturers, which in turn will open up new opportunities for joint work, especially since Kyiv Mohyla Academy and Vilnius University are members of the same European university alliance Arqus,” says Dean of the VU Law Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr Haroldas Šinkūnas.

The NaUKMA delegation also visited the VU Central Library, had meetings with representatives of the VU Philology and Mathematics and Informatics faculties, and participated in the graduation ceremony of the VU Law Faculty.
