The Polish Law School at the Law Faculty of Vilnius University was established on November 9, 2001 by signing a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University and the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In 2001-2010, the Faculty of Law of the Vilnius University conducted an intensive programme of Polish and EU law (in Polish language), intended not only for law students, but also practicing lawyers, as well as students of other faculties who were interested in Polish and EU law. Graduates of the Polish and EU Law Program were awarded certificates issued by the two universities. Today, the Polish Law School coordinates cooperation between university teachers and researchers at the Faculty of Law of the Vilnius University and the partners from Poland.
Activities
- On September 13, 2024, the Faculty of Law was visited by two professors of law from Poland: prof. dr hab. Magdalena Tabernacka (Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics, University of Wrocław) and prof. dr hab. Joanna Mucha (Faculty of Law and Administration, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań). During the visit, the guests met with the Vice-Dean for Science of the Faculty of Law, prof. dr Jurgita Paužaite-Kulvinskiene and the Head of the Polish Law School, dr Ilona Michailovič. During the meeting, the possibilities of the Arqus European University Alliance, of which Vilnius and Wrocław Universities are members, as well as the specifics of the administrative process, mediation in private and public disputes in Lithuania and Poland were discussed.
- On 5-6 September the annual conference of the European Society of International Law “Technological Change and International Law” is taking place in Vilnius. The day before the main conference, a meeting was held with the participants of the conference from Poland – researchers from the Universities of Warsaw, Wroclaw and Lodz and the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The meeting was initiated and organized by Dr Ilona Michailovič, Head of the Polish Law School, and the conference organizer Dr Inga Martinkutė. There was discussed the topics of international law, human rights, interdisciplinary research and the prospects for cooperation.
- May 27-29, 2024 The Faculty of Law was visited by guests from the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, the Institute of Legal Sciences Dr Maciej Jarota and Dr Piotr Sławicki. During the visit, the guests met with the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Vigita Vėbraitė, and the head of the Polish Law School, Dr. Ilona Michailovič. The guests also gave lectures “The electronic form of legal transactions. Computerization in civil procedure. Online Dispute Resolution” and “Methods of defining Artificial Intelligence and forms of its use in the workplace. Employee health protection in the context of the application of AI in labour law. EU regulations on AI”.
- May 7, 2024 Dr Ilona Michailovič, Associate Professor of the VU Law Faculty and Head of the Polish Law School, was awarded the Republic of Poland Prize. I. Michailovič was awarded by the Bronze Cross of the Order of Merit for the Republic of Poland. This award is given for merits in the development of Polish-Lithuanian scientific and university cooperation. More information.
- April 22-26, 2024 VU Law Faculty was visited by Prof. Hab. Dr. Artur Ławniczak from the Department of Constitutional Law of the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wroclaw and Tadeusz Juchniewicz, librarian of this Faculty. - March 13-14, 2024 a meeting – discussion with dr. Tomasz Lachowski Research Fellow at the Department of International Law and International Relations in the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Lodz. The visit was organised by the Ukrainian Law Centre of the VU Law Faculty. More information.
- March 5, 2024 The Interdisciplinary Lithuanian and Polish symposium “Between law and literature. Czesław Miłosz”. The inspiration for the joint Lithuanian-Polish symposium dedicated to law and literature was the resolution of the Senate of the Republic of Poland declaring 2024 the year of Czesław Miłosz. Czeslaw Milosz received his legal education from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the Stefan Batory University in 1934. The welcome speech was given by the Ambassador of Poland to Lithuania Dr. Konstanty Radziwiłł and Dr. Haroldas Šinkūnas the Dean of the Law Faculty. Speakers at the symposium were Dr Tomasz Snarski, advocate, poet and lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Gdańsk, and Birutė Jonuškaitė, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union. - February 6-8, 2024 Dr. Ilona Michailovič’s visit to the Center for Foreign Law Schools (OKSPO) of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and a meeting on cooperation with the Head of the center prof. Piotr Szwedo.
- December 5-9, 2023 Twinning program of the European university Arqus alliance. Ignas Kromerovas, Gabrielė Garbauskaitė, Austėja Jatulytė, Danielė Gustaitė and Erika Čaikinaitė, third-year undergraduate students of criminology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Vilnius University, together with dr. Ilona Mihailovič visited the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wrocław during the implementation of the Arqus Twinning-funded project Mediation as a tool for constructive conflict resolution using community-based reconciliation approach. - November 30, 2023 Discussion “16 days of activism against gender-based violence: the impact of gender neutrality on Lithuanian and Polish societies”.
