The beginning of the new semester traditionally started with a cycle of scientific events “Spring of Law Science”. The key highlights of the special week were the scientific – practical conference „The Research of Criminal Justice“ and the events on international topics related to the visit of the delegation from the University of Antwerp (Belgium).
On February 6th to 8th Prof. Dr. Dirk Vanheule, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Johan Meeusen, Honorary Vice-Rector and Prof. Dr. Gert Straetmans, Faculty of Law visited the Vilnius University Faculty of Law. A three days visit aimed at getting acquainted with the legal system of Lithuania, exchanging scientific ideas as well as discussing various ways of cooperation including exchange of PhD students, post doctorates and international students.
The University of Antwerp scientists visited the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania. The President of the court Prof. Dr. Dainius Žalimas reviewed the development of constitutionalism, the functions of the Constitutional Court and latest novelties of the court system in Lithuania. The judge also told about an event of great importance, i. e. the Congress of Global Constitutional Justice Conference No4, which will take place in Vilnius next autumn.
During the visit at the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania (the SACL), the guests met the Interim President of the Court Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irmantas Jarukaitis. The head of the court together with the judges Ramūnas Gadliauskas, Dalia Višinskienė and Head of Case-Law department Audronė Gedmintaitė presented latest developments of the SACL, competence of administrative courts and latest trends in case-law. The on discussion on cooperation specificities between the SACL and the Constitutional Court finalised the Belgian scientist’s meeting.
The guests from Antwerpen also participated in a few scientific events on hot legal issues that EU faces today. The events cycle included the joint working meeting withVilnius University Faculty of Law scientists on EU migration, the discussion on „Recent Global Challenges to Legal Systems“ together with PhD students and young scientists and Prof. Dr. Johan Meeusen’s lecture on „EU Conflict of Laws: New Solutions to New Problems” attended by both students and lecturers.
The Dean of the Faculty Prof. Dr. Tomas Davulis hopes that cooperation ideas discussed during the visits will turn into partnership projects with the University of Antwerp in the near future.
