Didier Reynders, member of the European Commission responsible for justice, visited Vilnius University yesterday. During the visit, he met with VU Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas and assoc. prof. dr. Haroldas Šinkūnas, the Dean of Vu Law Faculty.
The discussion after the meeting was attended by D. Reynders, prof. R. Petrauskas, assoc. prof. dr. H. Šinkūnas, VU Partnership Vice-Rector Artūras Vasiliauskas and Head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania Marius Vaščega, the discussion was moderated by Assoc. Dr. Indrė Isokaitė-Valužė.
Here it was discussed about the importance of the principle of the rule of law, how to bring guilty persons to justice for crimes related to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, how to compensate damage caused during the war using frozen funds and assets of the Russian state and certain individuals. The commissioner praised that Lithuania is active in all these legal processes. During the discussion, D. Reynders briefly presented the European Commission’s proposal to establish the International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression in Ukraine.
