“What is the judicial role today?”. One of the most difficult questions of law. The difference between the US and European legal systems, important judgments of the Supreme Court of the United States, the importance of comparative studies discussed with Prof. Charles Szypszak, who is Albert Coates Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government. The discussion led by Dr. Donatas Murauskas (Vilnius University Law Faculty).
We touched upon conceptual and practical issues such as the political role of the Supreme Court of the United States; the difference between the originalists and proponents of ‘the living constitution’; and the recent judgment Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on abortions.
We also talked about the importance of getting to know foreign law to lawyers from both sides of the Atlantic. We ended our talk with some thoughts about the new course “Current Public Law Topics in Comparative Perspective: Europe and the United States” that we will be giving to Vilnius University Law Faculty and the University of North Carolina students next semester.
